Nerds think they know dice.

They play their silly little games. They say “oh, pass me that d8,” “roll a d4 for me.”

Many might not stop to think what they are even saying. What do these terms mean, “d8,” “d4.” Why d?

“Oh!” A nerd might exclaim reading this. “That’s easy, it just means die, or dice.” You fool. Try replacing the “d” in our abbreviations with such words.” “Pass me the die 8.” “Roll a dice 4 for me.” You will be tossed out of game night, tears streaming down your face, dice clutched to your chest, revealed for the ignoramus you are.

That d is a badge of honor, given to a die through rite and ritual. When initially forged, a die is not a d-anything, regardless of its number of sides. The d6 you roll started its life as an a6, and was transformed, reborn as a d6 after a sacred process I shall now deign to teach you.
